Just Another Saturday
Phil Harper pictured above, testing out his new MT5 Series IV surf mat.
All pictures by Eric da Bolt Bridges.
With SCUMM stalwart Paul Newman working at his daughters school fete, it was just Eric , Phil and myself waving the flag for mat riders last Saturday.
We bumped into another paipo enthusiast whilst drinking coffee, nice little board made from marine ply then coated with water based epoxy.
Some frame grabs from my helmet camera, the water was just crystal clear and warm.
After a quick check at Mat Cove, we were soon driving down the back road to Bendy, for some clean beach break conditions! After a couple of hours there, a quick coffee and a long chat , it was decided to head down to Gilligans, where Paul and myself had surfed the previous day on edge spoons, and we weren't disappointed to find still a couple of feet of swell hitting the Island, with just a few SUP riders and weekend warriors to contend with.

The water at the moment is just so clean, another benefit of living down here on the south coast is that there is no ocean outfall of sewage and no heavy industry pumping crap into the ocean , so when the water looks clean, it really is crystal clear, and as you can see in the video , I could film from the water up and see our face’s clearly , so when it came to surfing over the barely covered reef, you can see directly thru to the weed banks , twisting and swaying in the currents….just a awesome day to surf and film.
some more pictures below that Eric took with his water proof camera.
With 4 SUP riders and a handful of stand up surfers to contend with, I was able to steal a couple of corkers right thru, down the side of the reef, but as a few more guys came out, we decided to move over to the front section of the Island, where it was shallow, but standing up great with a nice run over the shallow weeds beds! Another benefit of riding mats is able to surf places that standard surf craft cannot, so we made pigs of our selves on this section , while 20 metres away, the other crew could only watch us having fun!
