The last few weeks of the 2014 year have been fairly average, which is the norm for down here and always seems to coincide with annual onslaught of visiting Xmas holiday makers  on the NSW South Coast…..a extra 330, 000 I believe this year!!

But did get some better waves the other weekend before the carnage begin, so with Paul and I opting to ride kneeboards ( I am still having shoulder problems) Eric was the true SCUMM  and rode his faithful 4GF Standard.

‘Bonza’ Mate

GOPR7529

1975 Chris Crozier inspired  ‘ Bonzer ‘ kneeboard shaped by Mick Mackie

I first met Mick back in the early 90’s when he was shaping out of the same factory at Kings Point  with Albert Whiteman who had recently bought the Friar Tuck kneeboard business down to Ulladulla , so when ever Albert would call into my old place at Dunmore, Mick was normally with him as they both had board deliveries to Sydney.Over the years I would bumped into Mick surfing various local reef breaks,  seeing him ripping on his custom stand up fish boards, with most fellow surfers commenting on who was that guy shedding on the  ‘ kneeboard ‘. So when I decided that I wanted a custom Bonzer made, it was a no brainer on who I was going to call…….

Malcolm, Duncan, Terry

1970 the birth of the Bonzer.

The Bonzer is the archetype of the modern surfboard. It was the first tri-fin surfboard (Dec. 1970). Although unbeknownst to us, others were working on a three fin design of there own. There was a big difference between the two fin setups. They had half moon shaped side fins placed behind the center fin, and our keel shaped side fins were placed forward of the center fin. Almost four decades of success for the Bonzer, and almost three for the Thruster, we have demonstrated the archetypal nature of our original design concept.

There are two main characteristics that establish the Bonzer as an archetype.
  • Our establishment of the triangular arrangement of the three fins, with side fins placed forward of the center fin. The side fins were placed 10 1/2” to 12” from the tail and 1 1/2” to 1 3/8” from the rail. They were also towed in toward the nose at what has become the standard angle
  • Our design and development of the single to double concave (double through the fin area) bottom. This bottom contour was designed to work in conjunction with the fins to organize the water flow through the tail area.

A trip down the coast, well it took us 45 minutes, so its a bit further than what we normally venture to, and only small compared to what I surfed the previous day, but with just us and one other footboarder it was still worth the drive….. with the onset of Xmas and school holidays, knowing that the whole south coast will turn into tourist fun park , its ‘ MAKE HAY WHILE THE SUN SHINES ‘

One of Mick’s Mini Simmons inspired boards, a touch over 5’4”  with wooden keels. I watched this guy surf on this and he was having  ball, as he said, ride it foot board, kneel and prone…all fun and super fast.

The big reef we all had a few waves but we were severely under gunned, I was skipping bouncing and trying to go sideways, we surfed it with a lot more wind as well which made it even tricker.
Great place for a surf trip.

Hope you are getting some waves and I am hoping the summer brings some settled weather for us in NZUD.

Cheers
Barry

Customline Kneeboards

A old mate of mine has just passed this onto me, he is going to do some minor repair work and hopefully get it back to a condition that is water tight and rideable.

When collecting boards it is always great to find out a bit of history and vintage of said board, so when I posted this Customline Kneeboard on a social media forum group,

I had this reply from  Rod Poole

First met Rob at Baron when I was riding for Graham King, he looked at my flex tail and we discussed refining it a bit more with a longer flex (11" top photo) He offered to sponsor me and I rode his boards for the next 4 years

Was sponsored by Rob when he was at Baron, Jacko' s and then Customline, my profile pic is my baron flex tail, great shaper always listened to my crazy ideas.

Rob also made his own fin boxes all resin and rovings

Another Baron double flyer pin same tail as one above, flyers 12" and 18' from tail

FILM CLIP, INTERVIEW

JEREMIAH JOHNSON – GANESH

DECEMBER 8, 2014 TODD MACALPINE

Local troubadour Jeremiah Johnson has just released the long awaited film clip to his song “Ganesh”. We catch up for a quick chat with Jeremiah about the clip. You can view the film clip at the bottom of the story.
TM:- Who directed and produced the film clip?
JJ:- I directed the clip and the production planning, Glenn Sagger Filmed and Edited, choreography was by Guillaume “Willem” Brugman at the Centre for Australasian Theatre.
TM:- The song Ganesh, is quite an old song of yours, it’s a great song, but why did you decide not go with a new track for the film clip?
JJ:- Good question, it was based on a promise really.. In 2012 when I realised the single on triple J unearthed I was overwhelmed by the fan suport with reviews.. During that time I said that there would be a film clip to say thank you, it simply took this much time to honour that promise. I’ve toured the East Coast of Australia in that time, and to some new fans that have recently bought the Album “Postcards” in other states the film clip might be right on time for them. However it might feel like a long time for Cairns folks and the people who bought it on release.
TM:- What was your favourite moment making the clip?
JJ:- Favourite moment was filming the set in action, with my person video camera. It may seem silly but at that point camera was rolling on set, a dancer was in costume dancing, Pappa Stanley was making coffee off set, actors were getting ready for the next scene and the set was alive!! After two years of meetings, drafts and planning the film clip was actualized. It was fantastic feeling.
TM:- Can you tell our readers what the track is about?
JJ:- The song is remarkably about a dream that I had when the God Ganesh visited me. It was profound. I had no idea what or who the God was but the next morning I got online and did the research to find out who it was. As unusual as the experience was, I aimed to write a song about it. The main riff was inspired by an elephant walking, the narrative easy to digest and the overall feel of it was meant to be easy listening. I feel like I did the best I could with it at the time.
TM:- Whats next for Jeremiah Johnson?
JJ:- I’m manifesting to play some more East Coast festivals next year and plans have been made to play some shows in Malaysia also next year.
For those wanting to check out Jeremiah live, he will be playing at the MOFO Xmas party at the German club next Saturday the 13th Dec, along with 5 other acts. Jeremiah hits the stage at 6pm, so make sure you get in early to catch his set.
