and a Happy New Year from the SCUMM Crew..

With work commitments and a general lack of swell that happens at this time of year, we always have some alternatives to keep us in the water , with myself receiving a new Go Pro Black 3+ Camera…Thanks Santa!

012

I gave it a trial run on Boxing Day , and with not a lot of wave action, I decided to test it out whilst having a snorkel at my local reef.
Under the Sea
This is shot with the new Super View setting, so its ultra wide and shooting at 1080 25fps…I am stoked with the quality of the vision, and big jump up from the Go Pro 2 ! Considering I started with the Go Pro 1 back in 2010, I have seen some dramatic improvements in these cameras over the last 3 years, so bring on 2014 .

Werri Beach Report from Johnny Tofu

December 27

After smashing up my car and another blokes car that smashed into the car in front of him yesterday arvo' I was looking forward to a dawn surf at the point. Luckily my besty, Terry Towelling offered to pick me up for obvious reasons. We got there to see a crowd on the point and also on the beach. Tourist time. We jumped off the point right into a totally great vibe, with everyone, even those we didn't know and proceeded to mat-attack the biggest waves we've had on mats so far. Then as the tide dropped we rode the beach. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! Then just to top it off after a good breaky, I rang N.R.M.A. to see how much the access's would be for me to pay the other drivers for the crash and was told, 'you know we v'e been taking insurance fees out of your bank account, and your fully insured. And some people think there is no God. HA !

The 2013 Krypt Surf Technology Surf Mat Tube Ride of the Year

wairo-15

The 2013 Krypt Surf Technology Surf Mat Tube Ride of the Year has a winner and it is...........

Well there were 3 actually but formalities first. A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed. There have been some truly great entries and they show just how far the the art of surf mat riding has progressed in the last few years.
A special thanks to the sponsors, Krypt Surfmats, Voit DuckFeet fins,Patagonia, The Surfer's Journal and the Ho'okupu Surf Shop.
After last years social media bunfight the judging format was changed this year.
The head judge was my grandson 5 year old Jake Baily Thomson renowned for his innocence, incorruptibility and lack of political agenda. Jake suggested that, with the high number of quality entries received this year, the prizes should be split. So this year there are three categories:

  1. The Krypt Encouragement Award
  2. The Best Photographic Award
  3. The Ultimate Winner Award

So without further ado here are this years winners.

The Krypt Encouragement Award goes to Justin Spittle for a great high speed completed tube ride at Thirroul in Wollongong. The sequence was shot by Zoe St Hill-Warren. Jason and Zoe will receive a high quality surf photo of their choice from the Ho'okupu Surf Shop.

The Best Photographic Award goes to Wade Saunders for his awesome slow motion footage of Jason Hall in Maui. The hands down winner of this award as it is beautifully shot and edited with amazing light and water quality. Wade will receive a Krypt Surfmat, a pair of Voit DuckFeet fins and a year's subscription to The Surfer's Journal. Jason Hall will be receiving a Krypt Surfmat because it looks like he took a flogging during the making of the footage.

Now for our Ultimate Winner Award.

With some amazing still and video entries the 2013 Krypt Surf Technology Tube Ride of the Year goes to Chad Stickney. Yep, the defending champ from 2012 has upped the anti again with some killer clean, deep, perfect and completed tube rides.
Chad will receive a Krypt SurfMat, a pair of Voit DuckFeet fins and an R1 Patagonia Steamer.
Congratulations again Chad. Such a great effort!

Well that is it for this year.

We will try to make the Krypt Surf Technology Surf Mat Tube Ride of the Year even bigger and better in 2014.
I hope you have enjoyed the competition and the great year of waves. I know we did.
Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year to all.

Let the Good Times Roll

Good Times are Thata Way…..

With Johnny Tofu ,Terry Towelling and Eric da Bolt

tofu3

After waking up to a overcast rainy Sunday morning, it was a quick cup of Caffeine before driving north to pick up da Bolt and head to the Land of Milk and Honey…Gerringong! I had made arrangements to meet up with Chris from Ecto Handplanes for a splash mid morning, so after calling into the southern car park at Werri Beach , it was soon obvious to myself and Eric that it wasn’t going to be the usual pumping surf that we score back at Home…so after sending out the Mat Signal ( messaged to Facebook) old mate Johnny Tofu soon appeared , closely followed by his partner in crime, Terry Towelling!

So after much banter and some funny surf mat lesson’s from John, we decided to hit the very small but at least clean waves for a SCUMM MAT MEET.

As you can see below it didn’t take long to get into the swing of wave sharing…SCUMM Party Wave!

Ecto Handplanes

http://ectohandplanes.com/

ecto handplanes, increase the thrilling speed and freedom of bodysurfing by allowing you to maximise accelaration and hold in hollow waves. Designed by Chris Anderson on the South Coast of NSW, Australia, ‘ecto handplanes’ have a specific shape, volume and strap so they peform as an insane surfboard for your hand:
“My project 1000 Surfboard Graveyard highlighted the thousands of surfboards going to landfill each year. As a surfer and designer, I developed ecto handplanes as a rad way to recycle broken surfboards. The ecto handplane is designed with a light single concave and a carefully balanced volume to make body surfing fast and fun! ecto (eck-tow) was a nickname, it's short for 'ectomorph', a term that refers to people with a lean and tall body shape. The name fits perfectly with the long, stretched out body form people must make while body surfing.–– Chris Anderson

After much laughter with the Werri Beach SCUMM, it was a quick drive further North to Kiama Downs, where we finally caught up with Chris to pick up my new custom order handplane and to get a few tips in the finer points of body surfing. Well the surf by now had turned to junk, but Chris was keen to try one of my surfmats and the Duck Feet flippers, so a little mat session was had , and the good times continued to roll!

Thanks again Chris for supplying myself with the Handplane and the great hospitality! Hope to catch up soon in my own backyard to share some good waves!
