4TH Gear Frequent Flyers Club

He is back again ! John calls San Diego home, so with the US dollar so good and the Oz peso so bad , the exchange rate is just awesome! Playing the ultimate tourist for the past couple of weeks whilst travelling with his partner Heather & daughter before they fly back and he then continues solo for a couple more weeks!

I finally caught up with John for a surf last Friday and we were joined by Neal and a host of other keen surfboard riders...it was pumping!

Back in Da Zone

Living on a Island

After a long week of work Friday night the call was made for a trip down the coast , the forecast was pretty bleak, just a couple of feet of swell with a touch of east in the direction. We were surprised to see a little runner pushing down the side with no one out , with me ripping my clothes off as fast as, wet suit on and mat & flippers in hand , running as fast as I could in the direction of the Ocean. Keith the local kneelo was there also,  taking his dog for a walk and his usual surf check, making the comment he would join us as well, so with just the 3 of us for over 30 minutes including a passing Whale and Calf in the line up , catching these fun little right hand barrels, running down the very low tide and shallow reef , Keith finally came walking down the hill with his 12 fin flex tail , fish kneeboard. Yes , you read correctly 12 fins , 3 lots of double fins , both sides of his tail

and he has the placed wired! He no sooner jumps out and straight into a wave , runs back around and does it all again!

By now the tide was really getting low and Paul did not want to risk tearing his new Standard from 4GF  , so he jumped out and took some pics from the shelf, leaving just  Phil and myself sharing the lineup , with  Keith catching his fill and heading back home for breakfast !

So after 2 hours of fun we spotted the next crew rolling down the hill , so time for a feed , coffee and time to reflect over the mornings adventure before heading back home !

Call us when you want it small!!

                        Houston we have a Problem

We have a Blow Out! Neal has finally killed his Vespa Round Tail , not bad considering it was purchased 2nd hand and been constantly surfed for the past 3 years , putting up with daily surf abuse!
Anyways here is some video starting from 3 years ago...

So after asking around if there was any 2nd flyers on the market for sale, it was a no brainier parting with one of my Lotus SS models much to the delight of Neal and the SCUMM crew...which he promptly took out for a test run

It was suggested that he could fix the old mat with this, but I don't  think it was going to be a great success!

BEST WAVE OF MY LIFE

                      October Long Weekend 2018

Sometimes things just fall into place  , and this past long weekend just happen to be one of them ! It started the previous Monday when I walked into the office and asked the boss for Thursday off so that I could combine it with my RDO and the Long Weekend , giving myself 5 days off ! Thursday morning provided the goods as predicted, 2m of ESE swell and offshore winds all day , so hitting the carpark early, there was already a handful of surfers out, which is not too bad considering it was the middle of school holidays. I actually took the time to have a good look instead of just a peep and then racing off , so he is what I saw first thing...

I decided to take one of  my Lotus SS surf mats out,  its my favorite mat to surf in larger , down the line waves. It is slightly narrower , which I prefer , and more responsive on the fly , so with a lower tide and incoming , I paddled out to see just a few different faces, fathers and sons and none of the usual local crowd, but it was only 5.45 in the morning and most of the local crew were still enjoying their boiled eggs with finger toast, washed down with a nice cup of tea.

Anyways I was out the back and straight into sets in no time, flying with the most ultimate speed on very long, loopy walls , with most of my fellow surfers wondering who is the weirdo , riding a inflatable raft , till Dean paddled up to me and introduced himself. I have admired Dean's photography work for years, followed him on social media and we have mutual friends , but have never actually met or surf together, so I was stoked and he mentioned he had his mat back on the beach , so we planned to hook up with Neal later for a lunchtime marathon on mats.

                                              ROUND 2

After a feed and caffeine injection with Neal, we paddled out for round two and this time I took out my Standard SS, my old faithful , all round favorite mat. Longer , wider and more volume , its a toss up between it and the Omni as a all round utility mat, big or small, slop or offshore , its been a crowd favorite for a while. I bumped into Dean straight off after paddling out, he was not hard to find as the Warp mat that he was riding is a fairly bright ' burnt orange ' colour and he had a smile from ear to ear. He was totally frothing and riding his mat well, considering he has only ridden one a dozen times, he was flying and doing crossovers with ease, but being a true all round waterman , its not hard to understand why he took to riding mats so well.

                                        The Next Day

Well I was truly tired from the previous days sessions , with close to a combine 6 hour session on mats , my calf's were killing me , like most other body parts , so I was in no mood for a 15 minute paddle out, so going right and riding my knees was a good option. Our favorite Cove provided the goods as usual, only small but empty with a nice sucky bowl section to hoot thru , I was in kneelo pig heaven for over a hour before one other surfer  paddled out and by then my energy was already tapped and my body was crying out for a recharge of food and coffee.

It was a fantastic 2 days of waves, plenty of hoots , fun and froth to go around...enjoy!

Road Trip

Its always fun to surf your local, nice and close, faces that you know , just like at home...but a occasionally Road trip can be called for and last Saturday was one of those times.

                                       Heading South

Well after the usual pick up at my place , we headed down the coast as the predicted east swell and south winds would provide the right conditions for a nice right hand point break , we got a bit of a shock to see 4 other surfers in the water as we bumped down the rocky track to the carpark. After watching for about a minute and seeing these guys were riding prone and getting shacked, I was down there in a flash with Paul not far behind me, with both Neal and Phil opting to sit this one out. I was soon in the water and notice that they were all riding esky lids and as soon as they saw my mat he asked ' you must be SCUMM'  ! Yep I nodded and his reply was ' I knew Eric Bridges' ! It nearly brought a tear to my eye and a great way to start the morning , sharing a few stories , laughs and waves, whilst Neal and Phil watched from the rocks.

                                                TICKS

Well never lay down in the grass while watching your mates surf, especially down here in tick country, they live on all the local marsupials & co and just love a piece of human flesh to suck on, so it was up to Doctor Paul Newman to perform tick removal surgery as viewed below .

I spoke to Neal Sunday morning, his eye had closed up completely and after some encouragement from myself, he called into the local hospitable to get some correct medical advice and medication, and by Monday the swelling had gone and he was back to as normal as he could be.
