Crash Test Dummies
I've been hanging for a good day out at Gilligans on the surf mats for ages, with work/xmas/holidaymakers invading my backyard for the last two months, It finally came together last Thursday and Friday, with old mate Neal Cameron giving me a call Wednesday evening , so after shuffling work commitments, we were able to score some fun waves on a east swell for two days straight…my legs are still hurting now!
Surf check before heading out Thursday with Neal

There was buggar all crowd out on Thursday Afternoon, with at one stage I remarked to Neal that I could not believe that there was just 2 mat riders and 3 kneeboarders out in the water at one stage, 3-4ft , clean and running down the line…what more could you ask for when surfing mats. Watch the video below from Thursday….crash test dummies for sure!

Friday saw a increase in swell slightly in the morning, so while I had to work first up, Neal was down there at first light and was keen to try out one of his modified UFO kneeboards..
Robbie Rennie below
By the time I had finished work and finally caught up, he was already in from his first surf and pretty knackered, but I talked him into paddling out with me for another Mat session….and he was glad he did! Warp speed on alot of waves, it was the fastest that I have ridden a mat, plenty of speed to be tap and the crowd was amused with our crossover antics, so plenty of waves being ridden , laughs and huge smiles all round….pity the crowd increased!

I was stoked to catch up with Mr Rennie, always a pleasure to ride with, I even offered my spare 4gf Omni to him so that he could share in the air mattresses fun, but no, he was keen to ride his kneeboard…till next time Robbie!
You want me to ride what?

Ah interesting. Looks like Neal has a handle and a bloody leash on his mat!
ReplyDeleteAll of Neals mats have handles and leashes, he just takes them off the Redbacks and glues them back onto 4gf and krypts...give it a go?
DeleteI wish we had a wave like that round here and with the ability to score it with only a few friends out! you guys are so lucky!!! well.. smart for moving there in the first place! you and neal are screaming fast on those waves, crisscrossing and going forever ....sweet!!
ReplyDeleteI wished this was working when you and Mike were here in 2011, youse guys would have love this wave as well on boards as well. Fun Times and Good Company! I was speaking to Robbie that morning and he was out at wrecky, because of the east swell it was only small over that side of the bay. Mats are so much fun and super fast in the right waves...Pure Finless Fun!
