THE WAKA FILES 1991 and Beyond

 

After finding alot of old VHS tapes that I had stored and finally converted over to disc, amonst them was a treasure trove of old waka club surfing from our very first year in 1991 and so with the help of Mark Able who has all the printed newsletters from that year, I have been able to put this together . The Wollongong Area Kneeboard Club is the longest running knee riding club here in Australia, and in fact probably the world, and was started from a idea from Eric Hahn and Wayne ‘Smurf’ Jennings, who was still involved with Southside Kneeboard Club, and saw a need for another club in the Illawarra region, and so with the internet still relativity new to everybody, a add in the local newspaper the ‘Illawarra Mercury’ was placed and calling for all kneeboarders to meet at Towradgi Beach with the idea of forming a new club….and the rest is history and still going strong into 2012.

The boys from the mighty kneeboard club held their pointscore down at beautiful Werri Beach and with that being a stone’s throw away , we decided to call in and catch up with the boys from WAKA. Knowing there was not alot of swell running, I threw in my surfmat and hoped for the best, so after getting some coffee at Mickey Dees at South Nowra, we headed north and picked up Eric on the way thru!

Surf Mats and Summer Fashion

Now there should be a certain etiquette to what beach fashion you should wear whilst gracing the beautiful waters of our coastline, so when Eric decided to wear just his speedo’s while going for a surf mat, there was a loud cry from the waka tent…..NOOOOOOOOOOO!



and this is the correct beach fashion to be worn , helps if your female as well!
