Gilligans Island….the Next Day

WED4

What Crowd? da Bolt was down bright an early at my house , so with him chewing my ear off with tales from the previous days carnage with the SCUMM boys, the short drive down the road to back beach seemed to go a lot quicker than normal! I decided to surf Bendy first up, with the hope of surfing the Island later, depending on the crowd factor. There was some nice A frames to be had on the beach , with just a couple of footboarders out and clean offshore winds!

So after a hour or so, we had enough of small beach break waves,  so it was back to my favourite , crowd or no crowd, I was going out there ! So when we saw only a handful of Loggers out there, it wasn't a hard decision to paddle out and score some long, fun running waves…and nothing is better than taking off on the inside of everybody, flying down the line and seeing the look of dismay as they couldn't burn me, let alone catch the wave!

The new series V Krypt surf mat is fast, and I mean REAL FAST,  it fly's  down the line! I have spoken to Mark Thomson and he has confirm this new model DOES HAVE new material on the bottom , and with the  deck grip trialing well, I think I have a winner with the balance of slip & grip and a far superior surf craft than the others on the market…Stoked!

We both had a great time, caught plenty of waves, and the vibe in the water was fairly happy…and just as we paddled in, another stream of surfers with assorted surf craft started to paddle out, so 2 surfs in with minimal crowd was a bonus considering how crowded the day was before. We were also approached by nice young couple who was carrying longboards, they walked past, did a double look and proceeded to come back to us to enquire about a surf mat  for his pregnant wife , as she explain it was getting harder to paddle a hard board with a growing belly, and saw the SCUMM boys the previous day having a blast on their soft decked mats , so another mat rider in the water, this time riding tandem  I hope!

Not just a pretty face Phil Harper

SCUMM Salute to both Phil and Marie Harper!!

Care South family helps siblings

By Glenn Ellard

Sept. 23, 2014, 6 a.m.
For Phil and Marie Harper of Kings Point, years of caring for children and being involved in their lives did not have to stop when their children grew up and moved away from home.
They have simply continued to nurture, care and love after becoming foster carers through Care South.

“I just always wanted to care for children,” Marie said.
“Even when mine were growing up I always thought about doing it.”
As the oldest of eight children in her family, she spent her early life helping to take care of younger siblings, and quickly found joy in looking after young children.
“I’ve always had kids around,” she said with a smile.
“I’ve always been the big sister helping out.”
She had a kindred spirit in Phil, who coached soccer of different ages for 18 years and said humbly, “I can relate to the young ones a bit.”
So soon after their youngest child turned 18 they signed up as foster carers, embracing the challenges and opportunities it presented.
Phil said there were occasional challenges that arose, but stressed, “Kids are kids, they just want to be treated as kids.
“There are going to be challenges with any child, you just have to build a relationship which includes plenty of talking when needed,” Phil said.
He added an important consideration was to treat all foster children the same as his own children when it came to love, support, encouragement, rules and even punishment.
“You’ve got to let them know that no matter what happens you will be there for them,” Marie added.
She said she was a big believer in quantity time, and giving children as much time as they needed, rather than the modern focus on quality time,
Phil and Marie have been fostering children for about five years, and some of the children they have cared for have returned to their families once parental issues were addressed.
Phil said that was a key part of the process because “all children want to be with their parents”.
While that could test emotions at times, “all kids move out eventually”, he said, adding it was important for children to maintain strong links with their parents.
“They’re always going to have their parents, but we still keep in contact with all the children,” Phil said.
While many people hesitate when considering becoming foster carers, Phil and Marie encouraged more people to get involved.
“There’s too many disadvantaged kids out there who need someone to take care of them,” Phil said.
Marie said there was no burden in being a foster carer.
“I don’t find it tough because I enjoy doing it, it’s just an extension of the life I have been living ever since I became a mother,” she said.
“At the end of the day you just want them to be happy and enjoy their childhood as much as they can.”
