Taking my new MT5 with ‘Hip-Grip’ for its maiden voyage….
Happy Oz Day
Australia Day fell on a Saturday this year and as usual I was stuck on my hands and knees installing a new floor at a local butcher shop, so I wasn’t able to join my fellow SCUMM brothers for a surf. Monday was the public holiday , and with Cyclone Oswald working its way down the Queensland coastline ,leaving behind a trail of devastation and flooding, it was only a matter of time before we would feel the full brunt of it here also on the NSW South Coast , so up nice and early and down to the reef to be greeted by some really nice thick waves with just a handful of crew…Stoked!
So after enjoying myself for over a hour and a half and having some of the best slides with plenty of size to the waves, it was back home to grab the wife , pack the BBQ gear and meat and head on down to Cudmirrah Shop for our traditional Australia Day BQQ.
So with the rain pouring down it was decided to have a coffee and see what the weather was going to do, and to my surprise as I walked into the shop was an old mate and the co founder of the mighty WAKA kneeboard club, Eric Hahn , enjoying a coffee , so it was great to catch up and talk about old times……
With a break in the rain, we made a dash to the BQQ which had some cover, and of course left our wives to cook while we took off back down to the reef so that Paul and Eric could get their fill of waves , ‘I’m only going to catch 3 waves and come in’ said Eric…yeah right, so I kindly offered to take some pic’s of them while hiding under my umbrella from the rain.
As you can see in the picture below the you lid rider wasn’t too impressed by the boys, and I wouldn’t blame him either after Eric pushed his mat into the young fellas hands and said ’hold this’ while he put his flippers on…classic!
The size had dropped slightly with the lower tide, but the boys had fun on some of the inside waves, leaving the ever increasing stand up crew to the outside sets.
