I caught up with Nathan last week when he paddled out at my local on a surf mat, so it was good to pick his brains about riding spoons, as this is all he surfs , and has a few in his collection ranging from single fins to the hybrid ‘ three fin ‘ models that Neal is pictured with above.
Living in Wollongong, he has a few choice point breaks , reefs and beaches to choose from . Spoons require bigger, stronger surf to really get them going and flexing, but unlike the sixties when the crowds were minimal, and the pointbreaks more user friendly, its way harder to snare a few good bombs from the ever increasing crowd of surfers of today . We spoke about the difference between the single fins compared to the modern hybrid multi fin, and he agreed that the original mono fin spoons rode and flexed the best, and was in fact getting a single fin put back in his favourite carbon spoon.

Below is a couple of videos I made last years riding my spoon ( pictured below with Phil Harper ) out at Gilligans, with the go pro mounted right on the nose, facing back, and the other with the camera mounted on my helmet.

I was surprised to see another mat rider paddle out the other day, even more when I saw it was Nathan who normally rides his edge spoon, and considering  he only hops on a mat ever now and then, he rode it quite well , taping the speed line in the wave face with ease as you can see in the video below…
