Tall Tales but True from the SCUMM Vault
Funky Friday
I caught up with good mate and fellow SCUMM , Brian ‘Rocks ‘ Manahan last Friday morning, and his call of driving down the coast coincided with me finishing work, so we arranged to meet and then venture out to Shelly’s for a wave or two, which had a lot of East in the swell and was breaking like a point break.
Brian was super keen to try out the Mother Ship, a kneeboard made for good mate Paul Gleeson, and Brian was able to borrow it … just don’t ding it!

Five Fin Setup using ‘ Soar Fins ‘
The surf was around 3ft plus and with a minimal local crowd, there was plenty of long rides to test out our equipment . The wind had a touch of west , so the wave face had a slight ripple but plenty of push in the swell to satisfied Brian . I only caught a few on my kneeboard before breaking a legrope and losing my board up on the reef , so I switched over to my hand plane for a few womp’s and wave runs.

Early morning SCUMM raid
‘’ Got a new member ‘’ Paul said and she's keen to go for a surf with us and try some mat surfing. Pity the waves were a tad big for her first try, but at least Ainslie paddled out and caught probably the biggest set of the morning , fair on the head, before been washed back to the safety of the shore.
Welcome Ainslie Dickson to the group!
Trying a Smaller Fin
Well after falling to peer pressure , I decided to try a smaller fin and moving it further up the board KNEEMO STYLE.
I decided to replace my standard lager black fin with a smaller Crozier flex fin and found that I had no drive and felt wobbly on the bottom turns, giving me no confidence to plant my tail and drive , so after a couple of waves I came in and swapped fins back to my usual bonza configuration .
During the time on the beach I watched Phil and Paul catch some screamers right thru from the point to the peak. It was good seeing Phil back on a kneeboard, having a bum knee, he has been surfing on a mat for the last couple of years and I think the surf mat therapy and kicking has helped him get back on his knees again
Phil mentioned that it must have been over 25years since he has been to Shelly’s , so he was fairly stoked to get with bugger all people out.

Paul Newman
Paul had a blast and caught some great long rides, but like Phil the cold got the better of them and headed to the shore after a couple of hours to warm up.

Eric spent the best part of the morning filming and when the boys came in, it was time for the Mat Man to hit the water and catch a few waves.

I must have surfed for over 4 hours, after swapping the big fin back in the board went like a rocket , even as the wind would swing back to the NW and put a chop on the face, my 5’9” bonza kneeboard just powered thru the sections with ease, not bad for 1975 technology !
