Merrin Surf Mats

I was sent this the other day from a friend who was looking thru his old Surfing World magazines and came across this advertisement . My first surf mat was a Merrin, red & blue, which I used to take to the beach via the bus from our home at Dunmore, circa mid 70’s.

KNEEBOARDER

kneel

‘’This would be one of the best ‘kneeboard surfing’ videos that I have seen in awhile, great surfing and edit, well done Enzo’’

Paul Herriott : Kneeboarder

from enzo gonzo
Paul Herriott has been living and surfing on the Gold Coast since the 1970's and is a respected member of the southern Gold Coast's surfing fraternity - stand ups and kneelophiles alike.
Paul had competed successfully in the earlier professional kneeboard circuit back in the 1970's and had made a small comeback in the mid 2000's making it in two World Championship age finals.
He is well known amongst the new generation of Kneelophiles as a charger in small and big waves. At last count Paul's Uluwatu big wave surfing (kneeboarding) exhibition in 2010, has a masted 67,000+ hits on Youtube.

This document is a small collection of footage I had shot over a 22 year period of Paul surfing, Kirra, Snapper and Uluwatu, starting in 1990 . The interview was recorded informally in January 2008.
At 60, Paul still surfs and charges in big waves on the Gold Coast and at Bali's Uluwatu left-handers .

Kneel Boarding Fun

Below is a little video that I put together from the leftovers of a  recent edit. My Self and Eric da Bolt were out surfing one of our favourite waves on mats, and was joined by a local kneeboarder mate of ours named Ric the Kneelo! So while he is not packing shelves at night at the local supermarket, you can normally find him surfing the abundant reefs and beaches , on his trusty kneeboard. I shot this with my little Go Pro camera, on the WVGA setting at 240fps, to achieve a really nice slow mo effect.

I also like to call Ric the Dolphin Whisperer , as every time I surf with him, there seems to be a pod of Dolphins surfing thru the break, like in the pictures below from a few years back.

Adventures in Paradise

This is the complete edit from the day, and you can see Ric looking from the viewing platform. So much fun on the mats, but the ‘high’ for me was when a very large pod of dolphins, and I am talking about 40 +, came bouncing thru the lineup, and casually swam past us, on their way to Manyana. In my 35 years of surfing I have never seen such a large pod in a surfing break!

A Beautiful World

Paul and I shared some killer slides last Saturday morning, with just a few local footboarders, solid swell and offshore winds, it was a great session with the only bummer in Paul losing his Go Pro camera off his helmet, and my failure to fully charge my batteries for my own camera, other wise one of the best mat sessions we have had so far.

Secret Spot 007

I decided to stand on the rocks and shoot some video and still’s whilst the boys got stuck amongst the fun right handers on offer. The tide was low and perfect conditions , so I had plenty fun in recording the mayhem in the water, with Eric swapping roles after a hour or so, letting me get some fun rides with Paul, many thanks Eric!

The waves were there and so were we, Oily, Meatballs, Toweling,Wakka and some other sexy dude. Aaaaaannnnnddd............ACTION!!! Waves were had by all. It was Toweling and Oily's first surf at this hidden gem of a break and both had fun. So much laughter and yeehahs. If you still 'aint got a mat, you 'aint got no soul. And the best thing about it is, 'aint no wrong or right..............JUST FUN, FUN, FUN

UK Mat Meet

Report via Tim Ciasto @ http://surfmatters.blogspot.com.au/
Looks Fun fella’s
My wife and I just returned from our summer vacation in the UK. We had a fantastic time there and explored many places in Scotland, Wales and England. I had particularly high hopes to go surfing in Scotland but it was entirely flat while I was there. People are now saying that it has been the flattest July ever! At least we had fantastic weather and during our stay in Cornwall we were finaly able to find some waves.
As I wrote on VIMEO, this is NOT high performance surfing but loads of fun none the less :)
In the video Christina is using my Omni (my favourite mat!!!) and I'm riding a Vespa. In fact the Vespa turned out to be the perfect choice for me since I was able to catch waves as early as longboarders. I'm slowly getting the hang of catching waves early. The more I ride your mats the more I'm impressed with their performance. Thanks for making them!
Christina was having fun too as you can see in her smiles. These moments are the ones that I cherish the most. Sharing the stoke and having pure fun that is what mat riding is for me.

“ Fantastic little edit from Tim Ciasto of our two-day fun-fest that was UK Mat Surfers Matmeet 12: ”

How to ride a very deep barrel, bounce off the backwash, air / land it and recover  / exit …..and with mat riding show here, there is no right way or wrong , sometimes you have to ride off the back of your mat, using your legs to stall and tap that fall line, other times you need to ride very forward with your legs up to maintain a very fast speed line….watch the master with over 20 + years experience, showing it how its done.
