Blown Out

some pictures from Brian ‘rocks’ Manahan from a couple of weeks ago

bw

Technique is purely up to the rider…..some like to paddle their mats into a wave like they do with a board, where as I like to kick into my waves..

bw5

Keep your weight forward and onto your mat

bw6

as you feel your mat taking off, slip your body forward with one hand on the deck and the other on the rail

bw7

by keeping your inside hand palm down , you can lift and squeeze your outside rail to help control your direction, with your inside leg and flipper acting as a stabilizing rudder.

bw8

once on the fly you can release the outside rail, keeping your head down and body weight forward

bw10

Lift both flippers up and feel the slingshot effect of having no drag and just pure frictionless slide…why keep your hands flat on the deck? instead of gipping the front ‘body board style’?
Mats are soft and pliable , so its a natural to ‘pull ‘ onto the front causing the mat to stall and lose speed , so its no different to pushing forward on your deck when riding a kneeboard or footboard…keeping your weight forward  will always help with forward propulsion and speed.

DOLPHIN1

After Saturdays miserable weather it was great to wake up to some sun shine and off shore winds last Sunday. Paul and myself  ventured down south and scored some fun waves for a hour on the beach before being over run by a dozen foot boarders…a quick breaky and then a slide on a empty reef break…

My good friend Tom Backer recently posted some of his similar artwork on his blog !

pretty cool Tommy

Artwork below by Victorian artist Steve Parker , who donated his time and skill for one of the prizes at the 2011 World Titles. Steve also did a didgeridoo as first prize in the men's Opens , which was won by Albert Munoz , the artwork on that was incredible , with hand prints from all the local kids incorporated in with his own work, sorry that I dont have a picture of it to show.

My youngest son Curtis was also inspired to make me a walking stick for my 51st birthday, with Stuart giving him a few pointers on making the stick from scratch to applying  the artwork with pens

Happy Birthday Matee!

pauls 50th womp from adam williams on Vimeo.

We had a great slide for his birthday, the surf wasn’t the greatest but with just us SCUMM and Paul’s nephew Jeremiah joining in on the fun, the mate-ship made up for the wave quality…even a pod of Dolphins came in to say Happy Birthday!
